This collection documents the legal, financial, personal, and family affairs of Thomas G. Clemson, Anna Calhoun Clemson, and Gideon Lee, for his deceased wife Floride and their daughter, Isabella Lee. The papers, many originals, appear to be the documentation Simpson and other legal representatives used to prepare for the court cases and estate settlement following Thomas G. Clemson's death in April, 1888. This is a rich collection of primary materials and correspondence of president H.A. Strode showing his interaction with trustees, state agencies and laborers and contractors associated with constructing and staffing the college. A list of the first faculty; a short biography of H.A. Strode; tribute to John C. Calhoun; Richard Franklin Simpson correspondence, 1843-44, & copies of parts of Calhoun letters, 1814, 1821, & 1827.

Colonel Simpson, a legislator and lawyer of Anderson County; Confidential lawyer to Thomas G. Clemson, who wrote Clemson's will which made provision for an agricultural college. Col.
